yes, people are polite to each other because it's a societal norm, in fact "politeness" doesn't really mean anything by itself, it's just what society defines good etiquette to be aside from bad etiquette

I guess I have one friend. We don't share many common interests, and yet we almost always have something to talk about.
I also have friends in other cities, but we see each other just once or twice a year, and rarely comminicate via Internet or phone. So I don't know if it counts.
There are also about five people who are just polite and friendly, but wouldn't miss me at all.
