It's from an anime. The protagonist has been burned out on rejection because he would confuse a girl's kindness for something more. What was special to him wasn't really special, because it was just the girl's nature to be nice to everyone. So he's bitter about it.

The instance where he recites this is ironic because the girl who triggered it does have feelings for him, but he's too cynical and afraid of being hurt to believe it.

Some 4chan aren't dicks either, only on the internet where they can vent and act tough on the internet. They can't open up to others, not the other way around.

Also the whole 'lacking empathy' thing is chuuni spew. There are no Sasuke Uchihas here, mostly low self-esteem, socially awkward people. The protagonist doesn't want to be deluded and others to delude him. He wants to be 'genuine' and have 'genuine' relationships with others. It's teen angst but it's about a teenager so yeah.

Guess the normalfags here lack the empathy to understand though.
