Lighting makes a lot of difference to cameras. Most non-specialty lights have a CRI of less than 100, which is the ideal measurment. Anything other than 100 will either make you look pale, or oddly colored in some other way.
You'll notice that many women take photos in low-light areas with the flash on, because then they can blame the pale skin, etc on low light.
If you stare into the camera with an unnatural facial expression like a forced smile, of course you're gonna look bad on it. Try setting up the camera to take pictures of your face at random while you do other things. It will catch your face's natural expressions. You may even like how it looks.

Thanks. I saw myself in pictures made by others while i was not aware and the main factor is head tilt/position. If the camera catches me from a profile view my head looks bulbuous with rough features. I dont look that bad when facing the camera but yeah, really makes me think..
