In my home country, rural village women don't give a shit about height. My dad and like 6 of my uncles married women significantly taller than them. There I can see couples where the woman is both bigger and taller than her man and nobody will bat an eye. When I'm home I can comfortably flirt with a girl taller then me without fearing being immediately dismissed.

I think in reality it's just the media women consume. If you ever read a romance novel or watch a romantic movie the guys being bigger and taller is always a point of focus. They have this idea in their head of being with a man whose chest they can cry into when they're sad and all that type of stuff. People's romantic partners are also treated like status symbols here, and walking around with a guy shorter than you begets negative judgement while a tall guy is like a Gucci purse.
