An abusive personality is extremely definitive, i.e. it's a fluent trait of someone that generates interest, reaction, drama, etc. It's like the difference between an empirical subject and an abstract one. One is easy to pursue because all answers are verifiable against data and experience, the other requires leaps in thinking and often counter-intuitive answers. Women want something that will stimulate and dramatize their life, something that they can interact with the same way a scientist interacts with his project: with a precise aim. From my experience the aim is usually to 'fix' the abuser or to get on his good side. Either that, or there's some unresolved neurosis in the girl that she's trying to work-out with the abuser as her vehicle. In any case she prefers the abuser because he gives her, so to speak, 'hard data' that she can work with.
