I assume it is because the majority of people have never done anything hard or that takes a lot of effort and self motivation.

Up until Uni your hand is held and nearly everything is done for you, then people hit Uni, expect the same, instead of sitting down and getting the work done they fuck around, forget they are actually meant to be working on something, fail the exams, get too far behind, can't catch up and just end up dropping out.

They have no motivation nor sense of responsibility. All their failures are because of external factors. The fault never lies with them and they are never to blame.

It's ridiculous to expect an 18 year old to choose a career for the rest of his life, and the loanslave system in place in the US is ridiculous. I don't know what kind of advice to give you. If you think you can find something profitable you'd like to do, do so. If you don't, just try to fine a decent job you can live with. I had the advantage of being interested in all STEM fields, so I could afford to shop around. If you want to go get an arts/language/politics degree it's probably too late, unless you have superb work ethic and motivation.

I wanna just continue programming stuff/ making games by myself. The place had cool lecturers but I ended up with shit ones which can't understand how someone doesn't want to do things exactly by the book on everything.

It's just not for me. I look at the people who take uni, any course, and they are always these star eyed idiots who can't actually hold a discussion (without turning it into a blame-shifting/ shame war)

It's not there to educate the student but to provide employment for school teachers. The vast majority of elementary and high school teachers would be unemployed in the real world. That's why it takes 13 years of public education to teach basic algebra to a kid.

I haven't dropped out, and I'm graduating this semester with an astrophysics degree. But I'm not happy, and I don't know why. I had planned on going to graduate school but I did awful on the few and physics gre due to a complete lack of motivation to study. I think it's cause the past 2 years I've had to do actual research and lab work and I'm not really a fan of it. But I have absolutely no idea what I want to do because ever since high school this has always been what I thought I wanted to do. I've been thinking of maybe teaching highschool physics or writing sci fi novels.

Sometimes I wonder if I ever wanted to actually do science, or if I just watched too much Star Trek
