I was hired as a teller (male, 22 years old and enrolled in community college at the time) after working at a small grocery store for 2 years, all I had going for me was Spanish speaking and limited cash handling experience (at the grocery store I handled maybe $10,000 tops on our busiest day, at the bank I handled $10,000 within the first 10 minutes).

In my time there, we've hired 18 year old kids, both guys and girls, mainly based on their previous cash handling/sales experience and their interview answers. If your resume looks good (education, phone interview) and you get a face to face interview, then it's down to that 30min-90min window to see if you would be a good match. If you answer something like

we'd hire you for sure simply because we are understaffed and you sound mature enough to handle pressing a couple keys on a computer.

Ok that actually gives me some confidence. I'm not worried about face to face interviewing at all, it became easy to me after I did it a few times. I have shirts, ties, and suits and don't look like a freak to the naked eye. All of my previous social inhibitions were pretty much stripped completely after working for a year.
I was mostly concerned about the effect my work history may have.
