The most robot thing I read was Welcome to the NHK the light novel. Holy shit, it was significantly different in tone from the manga and the anime. I would recommend the novel over the cartoon any day.

The question can be posed. Is a robot anime one that deals with characters who are robot-like and themes of leading a robot-like life, or is a robot anime an anime which only robots can truly appreciate?

I think that the former, like or example Welcome to the NHK, are quite boring and only superficially relate to my own life.

I much prefer anime that allow me to become immersed in another world, distinct from my monotonous everyday life.

It's not a robot anime per se, but I watched Magica Madoke recently and what the ever-loving fuck senpai

I wasn't really a fan of the plot and characters to be honest, but the visual style was just excellent. it reminded me of Mob Psycho 100.

it's way different, but watch princess tutu if you want another "artsy" magical girl anime. it's not nearly as dark, but i think it's a lot better than madoka magica, doesn't rely nearly as much on cheap shock value

i see. if it's the visual experimentation you liked you might try the various anime that have been directed by yuasa masaaki. if you don't like one try another as they're all somewhat distinct from each other, the main thing uniting them is their willingness to experiment. the tatami galaxy is the big one that everyone seems to love. kaiba is really cool overall until the last stretch when the story gets stupid. but visually it's really novel and it had a good soundtrack too. ping pong is a pretty cool sports anime with a distinct visual style.

i can't think of anything that uses the exact same techniques that madoka used, only works that are similarly experimental.
