Before I was passable I got ahold of the gym manager and explained that I was not comfortable using the general locker room and was provided a key to the single-stall handicap changing area. I didn't explain my situation to them, and they didn't ask.

Now I just use the general locker area and have never had an issue. I'm FtM though, so your experiences may differ.

I'm not saying you shouldn't be able to participate in public life, but any informed person knows that it's the reality of a lot of trans. If you chose to go through with it despite this, well, you got to take on the consequences until it becomes normalized.

However, a smart person knows to not do this because there are consequences.
