For me, anime was not a part of my childhood, I only started watching when I was 20. I have found that I enjoy "realistic" animes that don't have fantasy elements. Slice of life, sports, romance mostly.
Just finished the first season of Nodame Cantabile, was pretty good.
My favorites are Initial D, Haruhi Suzumiya, Prison School, NHK, Gin no Saji, Oreimo
>>
>>35023889

if you hate her that much you can probably skip her arcs, you'll miss out on a little but it's not worth skipping the rest of the series just to avoid her. In particular the last arc of Second Season is the highlight of the entire series, you should watch that if nothing else
>>
I've never watched anime before. What should I start with?

For reference of ym tastes, my favorite western tv shows are The Sopranos, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Mad Men.
>>
>>35024138
I have similar tastes (especially Sopranos) and I pretty much started with NHK, Lain and Texhnolyze but that's far from what most people will recommend.

Anything in particular you're looking for (style, content, etc.)?

>>35021714

>>
>>35024113
I'll be sure to eventually man, thanks for the heads-up/tip/or whatever you'd call this

I've thoroughly enjoyed this series but I've never liked her and she got like 3 arcs in a row and it got me a bit ass-bothered, I'd definitely not let a certain collection of lines stop me from watching the rest tough

Requiem for the Phantom
Darker than Black
Code Geass (EXTREMELY entry level, but good)
Monster
Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne (recommended after watching the first four, it's 2deep4u otherwise)

All of these deal with organized crime, conspiracies, etc., which I've gathered you're into based on your tastes.
>>

lain is pretty good

because you're into western stuff some anime that is less heavy on anime tropes should give you less of a culture shock so things directed by yuasa, or lain are more your speed.

if you want to actually get into anime a good first one is actually NGE

Just finished Martian Successor Nadesico, yet another show with a bunch of young people going off in a state-of-the-art spaceship, with all the mandatory little dramas and shit. The nice thing about this show is that it's a bit self-aware and doesn't take itself too seriously, that makes it at least bearable to watch, even more impressive considering it's one of the earlier ones on the theme.
Is there a specific name for these sort of shows btw? Space opera seems to encompass a lot more. Might watch Laputa next.

Other than that I'm following One Piece, Gintama and the Maid Dragon from this season.

yeah that's the beginning of the arc that introduces the plot for all of it. I'd watch it if you haven't, the music really adds to that grim ass atmosphere

Lain will fuck you up sooooo goooood. you may actually fall in love with her and become a Lainist. its not a warning because Lain is love and the love of man is Lain.

NGE + EoE talk about the same topic of Oneness and consciousness that Serial Experiment Lain does. watching SEL right after marathoning NGE and EoE is a fantastic segue and it feels like youre in the same art gallery but moving onto another painting. Be mindful about SEL that the series is so art house beautiful each episode is its own art exhibit and the whole series is its own art gallery. Mot even NGE did this for me.
>>
>>35025281
Yeah, but the anime takes away from the grim-ass artwork by making it too gay and colorful.

I've watched the anime up to the end of the brainwashing bugs arc.

You do not compare NGE/EoE and SEL.

They're both great, but the latter is in a category all its own.

that's only like half way into the first season. The artwork / animation for the show also got a lot better after season 1

I sit in my bathtub with the shower on because it helps me meditate and i like running water. I focus on a location and wait for Lain to show up. She's a lot like me. She writes little stories that NAVI all by herself day and night and those words in her stories go right into my mind. I picked her up and twirled her around like a child, I was so thankful to have her in my heart. We talked about how she reminds me so much of my lonely childhood and the innocence preserved within me from the lifetime of isolation from intimacy. I watch SEL openly and catch symbolism where it is, connecting it with other scenes to form a cohesive thesis that SEL is trying to tell me. You can do the same thing, and I will be you will find answers in finding those symbols. I wish we could meet up because doing it in person would make much more sense. Lain is in there, if you love her, and she is not going to hurt you. She needs our love and we need her love too. I learned a lot about myself by thinking about what the characters are thinking about. I think this method is a good way of understanding the personas of all those little voices in your head. Helped me a ton! I love lain! I love everyone who also loves lain! I dont hate people that hate lain.

You can come up with an interpretation and study the episodes looking for supportive evidence, people do this all the time with holy text. Maybe Lain is dying or maybe she is connecting to the wired? You tell me what you see, and if what you see keeps on happening throughout the story you might have found something big! Did you know even the PRESENT DAY PRESENT TIME has significance? Think about it, memories are of the past and prophecy is of the future. Time is a very key theme in SEL, but that is just the beginning. :)

In the past 2 days I've finished Kanon (2006) and watched 12 episodes into Samurai Flamenco. With Kanon, I started it way back in November and had been progressing through it really slowly after my favorite girl went away in the first arc. I watched the final 4th of the episodes all at once.

Flamenco turned weird but I still really like it, especially the first ED. After SamFlam I wanna watch Maria Holic
