How does one actually go about getting diagnosed with autism/Asperger's?

Usually your parents or school staff will notice the symptoms of autism and then have you tested so if that hasn't happened you you're probably not autistic, just lazy.

I went to psychiatrist and said "I think I may have aspergers, I've read about it and it describes me." Then listed all the weird things I do. She sent me to therapy and therapist did an 100+ question survey with me. Then I went to therapy couple of times and when there was enough information and proof that I might have it I was sent to some doctor who basically specialises in this shit and I had to do a stupid childish ADOS test and my mother was interviewed. Got an diagnosis at the age of 19.

Yep. I barely got the diagnosis. Scored 7 in tests. Below 7 meant not aspergers, 7 and more meant you have it. So in my case it's clearly entry level aspegers.
