I've been going around 6 months strong right now, and now I've actually started doing well in college, and made a few friends (not just acquaintances, actual friends). No gf yet but we all know that a gf isn't the only cure for unhappiness for robots. I only lurk every week or so, and I post even less frequently. I actually do have aspergers and I like that their emotions are easy to read and that they are kind to each other. Describing the shows as "poor imitations", I think is simply inaccurate, as the goal for most shows is not to accurately portray average life.
The goal is of course to produce something that is sweet, sweeter than real life, therefore the concern of having the show be "convincing" is silly.
Much like how action anime is highly exaggerated, I could ask you if you found Berserk, a poor imitation of real life swordplay, to be convincing and effective in that particular element.
Yet, it is still an enjoyable work for the emotion and general feeling it gives you.

Indeed, one of the greatest strengths of the medium is to portray that which cannot be captured in real life. This strength is of such potency that CGI in live-action movies is a huge draw to the audience of those movies that contain it (Avatar as one example, but you'd be very hard pressed to find any sort of contemporary action film that doesn't contain CGI).

It's relaxing to watch, I'm not in it for any form of waifushit or pedoesque, it puts one in a peaceful state of mind. It's not about relating to the characters either, maybe they more represent a form of ideal. One of my fav SoL shows is Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, nothing happens really, you get to follow this cute female android running a cafe and going about her day, it makes me feel like wanting to be her, being an android, devoid of all human assorted aches and cramps, just being able to go about one's day without a worry in the world, it'd be awesome if you know what I mean. Show itself has a lot of pretty artwork to admire accompanied by a beautiful soundtrack and it leaves a lot for speculation about the post apocalyptic world she lives in, what happened, where did her master go, how many damn years has she been running that cafe now, is her master long dead etc.

and for the record I love shows with a good plot as well, all of my all time favourites have a pretty elaborate storyline, but SoL certainly works too.

To build on the nomadic-herder analogy, I sometimes wonder if some robot traps are the equivalent of selling yourself into serfdom to survive. A last-ditch attempt to stave off emotional starvation by selling off the one thing you have left (your body), in return for pseudo-friendship and attention.

Regarding the pic posted, I'd say the reverse is happening (as far as real-life interactions go). Anime used to be such an obscure niche, that you had to define the term in conversations. Now people understand what it means.

Back then, the reaction was either a blank stare, an "oh, I love Astroboy", or "Eww, tentacles!".

Thank god for Pokemon, that changed everything.

For me personally...
It's safe emotional outlet.
Many of the greatest anime are heart wrenching, and tear jerking.
Anime is also a great medium for exploring human behavior and psychology.

I don't collect figurines and tons of other anime shit.
I just like to binge watch a series by myself every now and then as a way to
let myself cry or be happy in a safe environment.
