How much of an improvement is vim over vi? I've been using vi and nano for years and haven't felt a need to upgrade.
>>
>>34986139
PyCharm exists too.

Python is taught at something like 80% of the top 50 CS universities, you thought there wouldn't be dev tools for it?

I guess my uni is shit. The main course sequences used mostly Java. You could only do Python in some specialisation and elective courses.
>>
Eclipse. Despite all the criticism of its bloat, it's actually faster the Emacs once you've installed all the shit you need in Emacs to make it usable.

Eclipse. Yeah it sucks, but it's probably the best I've ever used for any language.

notepad++ simple and does the job. sublime text is cool too.

Vim is a meme buddy. I guarantee you if we had to develop the same program in a race, I would beat you in Eclipse.

To everyone who says they don't use an IDE, what kind of programming do you do? And follow-up: are you cutting yourself?
>>
>>34987252
vi is pretty good for hacking here and there while sshing on a remote server.
It is not a replacement for an IDE unless the project is really small
>>
>>34986209
vim for sure. But I'm lazy and just use nano mostly, I know I should stop doing that.

>>34987314

>>
To anyone that uses vim, nano, emacs etc. instead of an IDE, do you actually have a job? How do you do anything useful? I'm just saying, if I walked into my job and used something other than Visual Studio I'd be laughed out of the room, lol.
>>
>>34988014
To add to this, WHY? WHY WOULD YOU NOT USE AN IDE other than to boast on /g/? It makes no fucking sense REEEE
>>
>>34988014
Yeah, I actually work for a major tech company. The most "IDE" thing I see anyone using on my team is Jupyter notebooks, lol

one of my teachers actually does a LOT (90% or so) of work with vim and cmake in fortran. I'm talking industrial projects from companies that come to the University looking for help, not academic 3 liner bullshit.

I prefer more modern editors like Sublime. Tried Emacs and love the concept and the fact that you can do EVERYTHING but IMO it's not worth the time... I know there's this "but anon, don't you understand? The time you spend configuring it will be saved x10 in the future!" meme but yeah no kiddo there's an optimum amount of return for time invested and Emacs is clearly suboptimal.
I literally do everything in sublime + REPL/compiler, and I do just fine. A debugger comes in handy too but lately I use less and less C so my chances of firing myself on the foot are close to zero, i.e. my bugs are going to be conceptual more than memory-related.
Also tried Atom. Lots of potential, sadly it's SJW web-developer tier so most plugins are lame aesthetic upgrades.
>>
Sublime for most things
Visual Studio with web essentials for C# and bundling
pocket Notepad++ for finding annoying zero-width characters and non-utf8 encoded texts
>>
>>34986052
>tfw you lost your interest in coding
>>
>>34988041
Because contrarian. You also don't need an IDE for smaller things.
