A) To feel slightly better, as human beings crave attention and are dependent of others
B) To hear about an experience that brings nothing to the table, making it look misplaced and unwarranted

I think that A is way more likely.

You can still recover from this. Just say "Point is... I'm sorry for being an idiot. You have my condolences for your cat. Was he sick? He's in a better place now."
