Anybody have any experience with ingrown toenails? I think I fucked my toe up even worse trying to fix it
>>
>>34961478
Go to the the doctor...
>>
Exacto knife the shit out of the edges and pull up on your nail a little. Place some cotton underneath to keep it raised while you sleep.
>>
>>34961483
I would if I had health insurance
>>
>>34961478

I just let it grow out, then get a pair of scissors and tweezers. Cut it slightly at then pull the nail with the tweezers. Happened to me at least 4-5 times. Just make sure your toe is clean to avoid infection.
>>
buy a nail lifter and one of these things if you can't go to the doctor, it's gonna hurt like hell so get drunk or high if you can't get your hands on anesthetic
>>
>>34961478
I heard cutting a V in the middle of your toe helps get rid of it.
>>
How fat do you have to be for this to happen?
>>
>>34961478
you fucked up dude, always cut your toenails flat. I had to get toe surgery twice because i did what you're doing here. ALWAYS CUT YOUR TOENAILS FLAT
>>
>>34961483
this, I had really bad ingrown toenails and went to the doctor. They numbed up my big toe and fixed it so op, go to doctor pls.
>>
>take pair of vice grips
>use to pull back side of toes skin from nail
>use wire cutters to snip side of nail that digs into toe meat
>pull cut nail immediately upwards towards top for toe to rip off the part that digs into toe meat
this is what i do might not work for everybody
>>
>>34961478
I've had them surgically removed twice in the past, (one time with black/green pus eruption) but I learned to properly cut my nails and haven't had any issues for 6 years
>>
>>34961507
This. I've had to do this twice
>>
I don't have this problem because (thankfully) I had my disgusting dog toes cut off when I was a baby and too young to remember it. Now I don't have to deal with ingrown toenails, foot fungus, or toe jam.

Bob Marley DIED from toe cancer. Removing the toes in infancy reduces the risk of toe cancer by a considerable margin. The benefits outweigh the risks 100 to 1.

Hply shit me.
More than 1/3 of my nail grows beneath the skin... Ingrown. And if I cut it, the sharp points grow again, riping my toe from inside out. If I live it alone, it starts growing too much and the pressure causes pain. It's a vicious cycle.
The only solution would be destroying the nail's matrix, and become a nailess freak.
>>
i fix myself by propper cutting techniques, it could take you an entire year

i have direct experience + medifag wannabe, try to listen well:
start by doing daily 2-3x washing of the feet with cloride water, for 10 mins or so. that will clean up the injury and make the nail detach at the sides. try to keep your feet free (no shoes and socks) as much as possible, if neet best results can be achieved.
in your situation the nail should get softer and allow the flesh to heal. if this doesnt work you will have to cut the sides of the nails on the part that gets detached, almost down to the base. i solved it myself like that.
doesnt look like there is infection but watch out if green or yellow pus starts to come out the risks get higher and should really go to doc

You've got two options

1) Go to the doctor and they'll remove the entire nail.

2) Let it grow out. It will become painful / full of puss. With tweezers you lift the nail up every day, bending it gently making sure not to break it. After a few weeks it will grow out fully and you'll be free of it.

any pharmacy should sell it, very cheap. dunno how it is exactly called in english, just say you have a slight nail problem and need to do disinfection washings
if you are really desperate even water and salt could do
>>
>>34961478
Don't cut that close, you'll end up with a nail that grows into your flesh at the sides. I spent my teens putting toilet paper in my socks to blot the blood from ingrown toenails.
>>
>>34963987
they will not

He's got plenty of nail left on the lateral and medial borders to remove with a simple partial. You can see the goddamn points still embedded in his skin

Anyone trying to get you to do a total nail avulsion is trying to bilk your insurance out of 300 bucks

This won't necessarily lead to results. I went to my regular doctor and she basically just said suck it up and let it grow out. Although mine probably weren't that severe. You might want to go to a podiatrist, which I was actually looking into yesterday since I still have bumps on the back of my feet from playing hockey which my regular doctor said would go away when I stopped wearing skates.
>>
You can cut your nail where it hurts with a knife and clippers. It is painful, but doable.

Though I advise to go the doctor. Nowadays they remove that shit easily with a laser. It is painless (if you don't count the anasthesia needles).

You are in luck, I know the fix for your problem.

Go on amazon and order organic biotin + iodine from sea kelp.

In about 2 weeks you will have nails strong as iron.
>>
>>34964706
In Canada. She also said I could use toothpicks to lift up the nail but that didn't really do much. I continued to suffer in pain for a few weeks but it eventually fixed itself.
>>
>>34961478

I have this from time to time too. Just get one of those nail scissors, dig with the scissors into the side of the nail and carefully cut off the tip of your nail. Most of the time it will grow out normally after that.
>>
If it's not too bad, put a cotton ball under it to relieve the pain and help it grow straight. I used dental floss once too, it worked okay. Always cut your toe nail straight across. Hell, I just trim it half way now to avoid this shit.

I got used to it hurting a while ago. Doesn't bother me much as long as I trim the fuckers (both big toes are like this) every once and a while.
>>
>>34962204

It can happen to anyone for any number of reasons. Typically it's wearing ill fitting shoes a lot, but it can also just happen because of the way your toes are shaped and how your nails grow. Weight has nothing to do with it.
>>
Stop cutting your nails in a round shape, just cut them in a straight line.
>>
>>34963026
Thats a tiny fucking toenail dude
>>
>>34961478

I get ingrown toe and finger nails quite often. I just wait until they get infected thenpick at the sides a bit and empty the puss out. After a little they heal.
>>
Whatever you do, don't try to fix it by yourself. Either go to the doctor or leave the toenails the fuck alone. Most of the time they grow back into the proper shape if you leave them alone.
>>
>>34961478
I want to fucking murder you just for posting this image at me
>>
>>34965551
okay first of all you are fat, loose some weight.
further, dude. DUDE. This is no ingrown nail anymore, you have a serious funghi infection and inflammation of the lower epidermis going on.

You are doing yourself NO favor in cutting it like this because this way it will only multiply the problem by a long shot. The pain goes away a bit because you take the pressure of the sides, not because it solves the issue itself. This shit will bite you in the ass sooner or later and I strongly advise you to unironically make a doctor appointment as soon as you can.

>>
>>34961478
Just go to a doctor and demand toe surgery (the one where they cut down to the root and burn everything away so that it wont grow back out). Preferably a surgeon since they are more experienced with it.

Its not gonna fix it self and you just fucked it up more.

The only thing that is painful about it is when they give you the local anesthesia, and as long as you chug ibuprofen pills the first days.

Two-three weeks later you are in less pain than before despite it potentially not being fully healed yet.

Honestly, go visit a doctor.

This is how it turns out if you don't clean it regularly (just use water).

A good way to get rid of it is the following:
Put your feet in lukewarm salted water for 1 hour. Put antiseptic, spray it with oxygenated water before you go to sleep.

That is the best way to keep it healthy. I've had it for around 4 years now. It used to hurt a lot, and if anyone stepped on it, it was worse than getting kicked in the balls. But I got used to it. I want to take off my toenail, though.

Since everyone in this thread seems to be toe experts, can I also get advice?

My left big toe always feels like there is pressure, like there is something under the nail. It's not painful, just kind of maddening. The big toe on the right looks much more normal, comparatively speaking. My pinkie toes on either side are awful looking, the left more so. Is there something wrong with them?

My toenails kind of grow in rounded, like instead of growing past the toe they kind of scoop back in. That's why I cut them so short, which I've just learned is bad to do. The also have a tendency to have these "breaks" across them that aren't deep or painful, but look like layers. I've considered going to get a pedicure, but that seems embarrassing, and I live in the middle of Texas.

pls respond
>>
I gnaw off the fucker when it bothers me. I just get my finger under the nail, force it up past the skin and chew it off.

Probably explains why my roundworms keep coming back, but I'm lazy and it's easier than looking for the tweezers.
>>
>>34967006

pressure from where? and what kind of pressure? general uncomfortable pressure or while wearing shoes / touching a certain part of the toe?

>My pinkie toes on either side are awful looking, the left more so. Is there something wrong with them?

Your pinkies look good in comparison, nail wise. Shit like this is really hard over the internet so I have to request that you try to "spread away" the pinkie toe as far as you can. Your big toe should move a bit away also during that process unless you actively try to push against it. If this isn't the case, provide a picture of how far you can spread your pinkie toe if at all.
Also pinkies who grew "inside sideways" like this have a tendency to have a little cut in the skin very close to your soles between itself and the neighbouring toe. If this is the case this is a breeding ground for infection and you should monitor that very closely aswell and clean regulary!

>The also have a tendency to have these "breaks" across them that aren't deep or painful, but look like layers

I know this sounds like bullshit but take off your socks more often and expose your feet and nails to the air, this well help the layering a lot. Don't fall for that calcium meme crap, that has been debunked a long time ago.

I also noticed your fingernails are quite long. If you are a girl then what the fuck girl.

Hey anon, not sure if you are still in the thread but, Yes I am, it's the best real advice in this thread.

I've used biotin for half an year and my hair and nails are ticker and stronger, nails especially, they have clean polish look to them and there's no dry skin hanging out. Biotin(Vitamin B7) also helps your skin, making it more soft and clean.

The same thing with iodine, combined with Biotin it does wonders and it actually works for everyone.

Do some research into this and order some, you will not regret it.
>>
>>34966331
No he doesn't

He's got severely callused and semi-fibrotic skin from his nail repetitively cutting into his skin. Take that fucker out and he'll resolve completely in about 3-4 weeks at most.

If he doesn't have abscesses forming there and infection brewing, he's certainly well on his way. Look at that rubor/erythema.

Of course he has a severe case of hyperemia caused by vasodilation from his repeatedly cutting into his skin brewing there, this is exactly what I told him.

Honestly the skin on the outer most left hand side right under the nail doesn't look fibrotic at all ( obviously not talking about the fibrotic skin he has going on there on his 3lbs of toemeat around his nail ), but infected with an early stage of onychomycosis

I eat a lot of nuts and fruits all the time as I can get them very cheap, fresh and organic where I am but still before I started taking biotin + iodine, I had shit nails, hair was tinning as I'm now 25 and random waves of zits.

Since I started taking biotin + iodine I quite literally stopped having zits, my nails look very healthy and my hair is ticker with almost no ripping during showers, though I started using cold pressed plant soap when washing my hair for quite some time.

Stop being a contrarian and do some research online on what other people are experiencing. If this shit works for me you bet your ass it works for everyone else.

I am a podiatrist

He has a severely dystrophic toenail that "flakes and breaks off" every so often which completely matches the the clinical presentation of fungal infection in nails. I also gave him the qualifier "or" and a second diagnosis which is much more likely of repetitive nail trauma.

I can't take a nail biopsy and get a path report over the internet.

No, I honestly do not see any onychomycosis present in that nail, and I'm wondering where you do.

Man, whatever works for you I guess. For the second time you told someone "to do some research" now. There is no research to be done, biotin has been widely debunked to have any connection to nail growth in basically ANY scientific article for the last 20 years. Hell, if you advise people to do their research then go to fucking wikipedia yourself. Even there it is said that this is a fallacy and at most wishful thinking.

Hey, Family med resident here. What's your opinion on the various topical anti-fungal lacquers?

Is tavaborole worth the money?
>>
>>34969736
you either had a guy do a shit job or you're unlucky 1-3% of the population it doesn't work in.
>>
>>34969725

How much would you charge to permanently remove a toenail? If anyone else is reading this advice from a bong would be especially useful.
>>
>>34969736
I eventually had to get my whole toenail (big nail), removed. that solved it permanently for me. no more ingrown toenail since back then(about 9 years ago).

yes the whole nail grew back in fine.

I don't work in billing (and I've been yelled at on /b/ before for not knowing how much a procedure would cost. All I can say is that I've heard a doc tell me he can net $300 from insurance for performing a total nail avulsion (not permanent) prior to using lamisil.

I know it can pretty expensive though, because you have to factor in your initial office visit and the procedure itself. I need to ask my billing lady eventually, but she just had a baby and is only in every couple days or so.

I had it done twice actually by different people since they apparently couldn't do both at the same time for some reason.

One of them was actually shit at it and hit a nerve.

>>34969821
I've been thinking about this a bit, but mine usually doesn't hurt so it might not be worth it.
>>
>>34969834

ty m8, I did expect it to cost a fucking tonne

hjjhvbjbhjhb
>>
>>34969754
Probably not.

Granted I've only used kerydin, ciclopirox and januvia (rarely), but they all pretty much work the same.

I want to say the success rate for a topical is about 10-17%. And that's if you are completely diligent and keep up with the schedule of using it once a day, every day for 9 months to a year.

I usually tell people to stick with home remedies like vicks (even without empiric evidence of it working) or just take lamisil. If you have nothing wrong with your liver already and you're not taking meds that affect it, you "probably" have nothing to worry about. I want to say liver side effects happen less than 1% of the time, and you're more likely to get the taste disturbances.

Kerydin is the brand name of tavaborole, Jublia is efinaconazole. I prefer oral antifungals for efficacy, but sometimes you get patients who can't take them for various reasons.
>>
I got an ingrown toenail once, it ended up going yellow and then got infected and it was one of the most painful experienced I've had. Luckily it was only inside the skin on one side. I had to get some scissors and cut away at the end to relieve the pressure. Eventually another nail started growing out underneath and the dead piece of nail got pushed up with it until the entire thing was out of my foot, fused to the new nail. I had to peel it off the top, the feeling was extremely disgusting.

Lol Ive had an ingrown toenail in the same place twice, AMA
>>

whoops I meant Jublia and not Januvia for the beetus.

I had a dude come in once after using jublia and he complained of it affecting the skin proximal to his nail almost like salicylic acid does to warts. Granted he spoke mostly spanish, so I never knew if he was just applying it wrong.
>>
>>34969736
I had lots of ingrown toenail issues on both of my feet. Eventually we killed off both sides of my left big toenail, and the right hand side of the right nail. None of it has grown back in and that was like 8 years ago now I think. Only downside is it freaks people out if I wear flip flops.

Sounds like God just hates you.

>>34969821

you can always get an old school nail surgery done where you get left with frankenstein feet
>>
>>34970292

Worst case scenario you can get an injection into the base of the nail that will permanently destroy it and stop any nail from growing back at all.

It'll look weird, but no toenail means no ingrown nail, at least.
>>
>>34970327
Did a doctor do it for you? If so how was that
>>
>>34961478
I never heard about this, what's it supposed to be? Your nail growing the wrong way or something?
>>
>>34967733
>>34969221

Take a small tub of warm water
pour in just a cap full of bleach and let your feet soak for 30 mins. Dry thoroughly and apply foot cream and foot powder throughout the day
Repeat this for 3 days
This will kill the fungus on your toes
>>
>>34968368
>pressure from where? and what kind of pressure? general uncomfortable pressure or while wearing shoes / touching a certain part of the toe?

Not painful, but definitely noticeable and mildly uncomfortable, constantly. Even when entirely barefoot.

>Also pinkies who grew "inside sideways
It is pretty sideways, and also very far back. It didn't have any webbing or skin between it though. Actually I've never actually had "toe jam" and initially didn't know it's a thing. It can spread out pretty far, and the big toe spreads out simultaneously, though I can hold the big toe in place if I focus.

>I know this sounds like bullshit but take off your socks more often and expose your feet and nails to the air

I honestly hardly wear shoes and walk around my house barefoot 90% of the day, and always remove my socks and shoes immediately after going home. Please don't think I am trying to brush off your advice, or be the toe equivalent of a fat person claiming they don't eat much, I do appreciate it.

>I also noticed your fingernails are quite long. If you are a girl then what the fuck girl.
No, but I am an autist that cannot stand the physical feeling of having short nails. But I do keep them filed and very clean, they never cause any problems at all like the toes.

>>34969221
I guess it wouldn't hurt to put some anti-fungal cream on them, even if they wound up being sans fungi. My shoes fit comfortably.
>>
>>34961478
I've dealt with these for most of my life. Getting the doctors and even a specialist to carve huge chunks outta my toe did sweet fuck all to help in the long term. Only after I stopped wearing peoper footwear regularly and started my own crude operations did it start to clear up. Most of the advice here is fine
>>
>>34961478
I had a really bad one a couple of years ago and I ended up having to go to the doctor because I was too much of a pussy to rip the nail off and it got infected. They just numbed my toe and cut a chunk out in like 5 minutes, it was nothing.
>>

No, but I kicked a filing cabinet last year, and my right toe has been giant and swollen ever since.

I've named it Quasitoedo. It still hurts.
>>
>>34971169
It's when your nail grows anywhere other than straight out, either growing sideways or curling inwards, basically the nail grows into the flesh of your toe and it hurts like a mother and usually gets infected and pussy. You need to have either the nail itself or the flesh around it cut away and removed in order to relieve the pressure, in some cases the whole nail needs to be removed but this doesn't necessarily fix it permanently.
>>
>>34971431
So if my toes don't hurt I'm good?
>>
>>34971780
You would DEFINITELY be able to tell if you had this problem, so yes you are good.
>>
>>34962204
if you clip the sides of your nails too much it causes a reaction where they start to grow. but theres nothing tellin them to stop growing, so they continue to grow through the skin.

find a salon that does the procedure in the video with the hot water to soften the nail and 1 prong 2 hook device
>>
>>34961478
I had a really bad one for a few months.
I ultimately took a safety pin and scratched the nail from the top as close as I could get to the flesh then took tweezers and pulled the loose nail up. Your friend forever, anon
>>
>>34961478
Not sure if this is common knowledge but dont trim around the edges of the nail. Trim it in a straight line across.
>>
>>34961478
I had ingrown toenails for a while in high school. My mother was sending me to see this "specislist" each month.
It basically was an 30 mimutes torture session where she would use various tools to cut the nail that was growing inside my toes (one each feet).
Never really cured my toes, so we paid a real feet doctor. $400 each toe.
They apply local anesthesia and burn part of the root of the nail so it doesn't grow on the sides anymore.
Was 10 years ago, pretty worth it.

>>34961478
I had two ingrown toenails when I was 15. I had surgery on the first. The other, I got drunk and did "at home surgery" for.

My dad (a doc) caught me, smacked me on the head, and took me to the hospital. So I guess the message here is go to the hospital. The "surgery" they do to remove it is very mild. Just a needle in your toe, no real pain after that, I would advise bringing a book to distract yourself.
>>
>>34975009
I don't feel any bone bits in there.
>>
>>34961507
cotton under the nail is the truth. alternatively go to the doctor. they'll cut up the nail for you after giving you some anesthetic and give you a bandage and one of those open-toed shoes
>>
>>34961478
Yup. Had one on my big toe for 2 years. Went to the doctor and found out I had MRSA.
>>
>>34961478
I get it occasionally with my right toe. I just dig into the sides and cut until enough of the nail is removed that the pain goes away. That usually fixes it for six moths or so.
>>
Got it once, doc said soak my feet in salt water (as hot as I can bear it) to soften up the nail then pry it up on the ingrown side, and cut in a straight line directly down where it should grow to.

Hasn't caused problems since.
