It was mostly because in order for a society to succeed, they need good land for growing food and lots of minerals to mine. No place in Africa had these thing. Europe though had both, which is why they succeeded.

Africa has a lot of fertile land especially in places like Zimbabwe. It's the fact that Africans don't use it.
