I've actually exchanged emails with the author, the series was based off of his own experiences as hikikomori. He intentionally made the series very NEET-lite so that it can appeal to shy normalfags. The story would be too depressing and unrelatable for most people if it were written realistically.

The reality is that Satou never answers that knock on the door to meet Misaki in the first episode. He never goes next door to meet Yamazaki. Those are what-ifs that he imagines from inside of his closed apartment. What if that knock on the door was my true love? What if that noisy neighbor was my best friend? What if that trip to the city was where I reunited with my highschool crush? It's just a fantasy. Obviously that kind of thing doesn't happen in reality.

The original novel is quite good as well; much more discussion of his illegal drug taking and his guilty interest in Loli.

He is fairly r9k except that Sato is not as ugly and unempathic as most of the people on r9k.
