Also, in answer to your actual question (sorry), I got put on a permanent site when I joined my current company. The last one I joined was my first actual job and they started me off on a zero hour contract doing shift cover work to give me low responsibility experience, which basically involved going to a new place every day to cover shifts that other guards had blown out from.

One shift cover job I got put on was to stand outside a sports bar that the bailiffs had stormed without warning because the owner hadn't paid the bills, and so I was there to tell the employees turning up for their shifts that they didn't have jobs and try and stop them from putting a chair through the window.

That was not a fun gig, but it was 12 pound an hour for a 12 hour shift, so swings and roundabouts.

I worked at Goldsmith's Hall in London when I was with my last company. More than once I heard these heavy oak doors slamming, and checked the CCTV to find them slamming shut on their own with nobody in sight. They were proper solid construction, too heavy for a draft to blow shut.

I'm going to be entirely level with you, I don't know if I'd recommend it. It depends on a lot of things.

First of all, you're not guaranteed to get a cushy situation like I did. It's entirely possible you'll get put somewhere that operates 24 hours and requires you to be on the ball the whole time, but you could also get put somewhere that's an absolute doss and doesn't even require you to stay awake the whole time.

I also can't say for sure if you'll find the job tolerable, since I absolutely hated it when I first started doing security. I quit after about three years and spent two years bouncing between various smaller jobs that were agonisingly stressful until I eventually realised that security couldn't possibly be worse and paid far better.

Also, you get to tell them what your preferred hours are when you first start, so if you specify you don't want to work more than four shifts a week, most companied will honour and accomodate that.

tl;dr, you'll potentially be very stressed or very bored with long unsociable hours, but you'll be paid relatively well for your trouble. Better than stacking shelves at least, at the possible cost of free time. Whether that's worth it is ultimately your call.

Don't get me wrong, it most definitely is a pre-requisite, as you won't be able to work until you've got the license in your hands even if the company decides to front the cost. Still, there's always a chance they will and you'll be able to work without spending a penny at the expense of waiting a while for it to reach you, but you'll almost invariably have to pay it back if you quit before a certain amount of time has passed.

Basic non means assessed student loan in Scotland is 475 a month, and obviously we don't pay tuition fees. You can get more / grants etc if you are poor.
