History's not a popular subject in the US, I guess since we're a new world country. Europeans all have centuries old grudges and shit they fucking hate each other. Americans have a simplistic view of WW2. We kicked the Nazis asses and nuked the fuck outta Japan, America is the strongest and we saved the day the end.

Maybe this was true in, I don't know, the 80's or something, but having a simple or even pro-America view on WW2 is almost forbidden in modern classrooms. 90% (I mean that literally, no exaggeration) of WW2 teaching in schools today is about the Holocaust and how awful it was to get nuked. EVEN if it looked like maybe they could potentially win in France (they couldn't) the war wouldn't be over. On the infinitely slim chance they managed to beat France the war would just culminate in an early D-Day landing and Germany losing to Britain and America anyway.

A German victory WAS impossible by 1918, though. It's like saying Germany in 1944-early 1945 could still have won if the Ardennes Offensive or Operation Spring Awakening had succeeded. Germany's only real chance of winning the war was in 1914 and they failed at the Marne. Then they failed to envelop and destroy the allied armies during the race to the sea, and then they failed during the Spring Offensive which had no concrete goals other than 'advance in the general direction of Paris' compared to their early war plans, and barely managed to advance past the positions they held in 1916. And THEN the Hundred Days Offensive shattered the Hindenburg Line and German morale with it. Germany had no hope of regaining the initiative after that, they just didn't get raped hard enough to realize how badly they were losing. The stab in the back only came after all of this.

Education is great. They teach the bare minimum which is determined by the political climate. Beyond that we're free to learn whatever we want. I read a little extra about the world wars but was more interested in cool history like the war of northern aggression. As long as you understand nazi r bad and jews good you can get by in most situations. Anything beyond that is fun facts. Most of the wars impact has already settled down and become what people see as just every day life. Nukes brought about world peace aside from isolated skirmishes with groups like Islam and cartels. Complacency is bad but you're typical button pusher is to better or worse of for it.

Although I went to Verdun this summer for the centennial of the battle, and I saw Fort Vaux, Fort Douaumont, some trenches that were restored, what was left of some original trenches, the massive cemetery, and went for a walk through the forest, which looked like fucking mars with all the craters and such. I'd personally love to see one of the remains of those trenches, WW1 is quite fascinating personally and something that no one seems to fully grasp the consequences of (literally everything that happened from 1919 onwards can be traced back somehow to WW1 and the treaty of versailles). Feels weird how there's no more veterans left as well, like an entire part of history is now closed and open only to those who actively seek it.

The Kaiserschlacht was heavily effective initially but once Germany lost that initial momentum they were done for. I'll give you WW2 though. Even though I find the Wehrmacht and what not interesting their only main edge was the fact that they faced off against a bunch of countries with horrid militaries that couldn't defend themselves in the first place (Poland even kicked their ass at Westerplatte until they literally ran completely out of resources and were swarmed). Once the Red Army got organized after Russia's superpower of freezing ass winter the Wehrmacht was done in the eastern front.

I'm mixed on it. While I do like the fact that it has attention to detail in a lot of the maps (especially Monte Grappa), it feels like one of those corny dramatizations you'd see on TV. Plus it doesn't really truly feel like you're in WW1. No trenches at all, mostly small maps, hell even the French and Russian armies aren't even in the game and they had a humongous role in WW1.


Kind of expected that from them after 4 and battlefront though, so I wasn't too shocked about it.
