I won't disavow the good of video games. But for me I had to came to the conclusion that they are toxic in my life. I can't moderate myself, no one should be doing excessive hours of video games for no reason.

In my case I am addicted to their instant gratification. I rationalize my long hours on them by feeling rewarded by achievements or getting a certain ranked in competitive games.

Yes video games as a pass time are fine. But if that's all you do, they outweigh the positives.

For sure I'll be gaming again in the future but I need to settle down and be used to something else.

I have a similar problem. I've gotten to the point where I don't get satisfaction out of playing games at all. I boot them up, sit at the title screen for a while, then hit quit. Got to where I was going through my steam library doing this for an hour or so.
I have tried quitting in the past, but it's always been a fruitless effort. I recently decided that if I can't get away from video games, at least I can have control over them, so I started an online course in web dev so I can learn how to make browser games. It's going pretty well so far, and I've rekindled my creativity and my love for games. They are no longer the cold grey problem they were before and have transformed into an art which I can appreciate and take inspiration from for my own work.
It sounds like you have some experience coding, so why not give it a shot? There are lots of free resources out there for making games. You can use a free engine like Unity3D or make your own from scratch.
