OP, what kind of dog is it? If it's a breed with a high "chase" or "prey" drive, your dog probably just acted on instinct- which is to say, it couldn't really control what it did. Don't hurt your dog or send it away, try to figure out the underlying cause of it's behavior and work to correct it. Remember that dogs aren't people- they don't have the same concept of consequences that we do.
