I smoke a pipe because I enjoy the flavor of tobacco smoke. Also, because a bowl can last for an hour or more, and I don't smoke inside, it gives me time to sit in quiet contemplation.

I first bought the pipe just to be silly, but I ended up enjoying it. I don't smoke every day, or even every week. I just do it when I don't have much going on and I wanna relax and ponder things. It goes great with a nice cup of coffee.

Same reason people do any drugs, it messes with the chemicals in their brain to give them some kind of psychological effect. Nicotine calms nerves and improved concentration temporarily.

But just like other drugs the body crashes after the high and everything swings the other way to try and return to a normal balance. The crash isn't as strong as something like heroin, but it's there, and it gets stronger over time to the point where if they don't get their high their body can't return to normal and just stays in it's depressive, irritable state.

If you are asking why people start smoking? Most probably due to social pressure, people around them doing it so "monkey see, monkey do" kind of thing. Some may pick it up from the media, and others may just do it because they want to be rebellious and show their overly controlling parents and teachers that they are all grown up now and can do what they want.
