how can anyone take these tests properly? i know i have at least 3 distinct personalities i use for different situations, and considering the one i use when im at home alone as my actual one would seem silly since its just as prominent as the others. depending on my mood i can be any type.

Their functions are totally opposite. Basically each type is made of 4 functions, which can be introverted or extroverted, arranged in order from most to least dominant. Each type will have two introverted and two extroverted functions.

INTP is an Introverted thinker first and and Extrovetred intuition second, while INTJ is an Introverted intuition first and Extroverted thinking second. Same sort of deal when comparing their Sensing and Feeling.

Just look at the chart. INTP has far more in common with ISTP or even INFP than it does with INTJ.
