Not every animal in a pack/group/society needs to partake in reproductive success. See wolf or sea lion or bees. In humans for example you will often encounter the bachelor uncle. The bachelor uncle rather invests in the offspring of his sibling which shares some of his DNA than to carry the cost of mating and raising him self.

The bottleneck of the survival of a species depends on the amount of eggs not the amount of sperms. Also females (not just humans) carry most of the cost (food, energy, opportunity) of gestation and raising offspring. So it stands to reason that any behavior than rewards these cost with the highest probable success rate ('alpha' son, daughter with alpha preference) is inherited and spreads through the gen pool. Modern civilization is based on monogamy (which is memetic not genetic), which gives incentives to ALL males to contribute to society and increases parental investment. Since monogamy is no longer encouraged you have a lot of 'betas' and violent psychos (sons of single mothers). It's more complicated than that but you get the gist.

Before media and internet nobody knew or cared about them, or they died in wars, were monks, beggars, or died of sicknesses that are easily treated today. Many men died before turning 14. I'm sorry for this pessimistic and materialistic view. But it makes the most sense especially in the light of recent discoveries in evolution/biology than confirm that we are more slaves to nature than we realize (most of our decisions are unconscious, we just rationalize it after see https://academic.oup.com/scan/article/8/8/863/1630444/Neural-reactivation-links-unconscious-thought-to) .
But of course there are exceptions (the few relationships that last a lifetime) but they are just noise in the overall signal. Thats why science & culture is so important, it's the only thing freeing us from the shackles of nature. Anyone who advocates we all should do as we feel/please is advocating a return to a pre- tribalistic state without deferred gratification. We would become animals again.
