Now that the dust has settled on this controversy, what does /r9k/ think of reading books?
A huge fucking waste of time
I think it's good and that I should do it more.
>>34756532
I fucking hate people who read books
readers are garbage idiots who need to be culled from the earth, I swear to god I am gonna punch the next reader I see in the fucking throat
Good but don't just read pseudo intellectual trash and manga
>>34756532
Good hobby when theres nothing else to do.
Currently reading through the asoiaf books
>>34756560
>t.autustic brainlet
>>34756532
I used to read a lot when I was a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
> To intelligent not too outgrow reading years ago
>>34756532
Yeah some of them make for great mouse pads.
You can also stack them up to make room to put your drink for when your desk is cluttered.
>>34756532
Books are for losers.
A good form of escapism and sharpening your mind.
Non-readers inhabit a smaller world desu.
>>34757881
yee, escapism is what its about
>>34756532
Basically this is what I think
- Schopenhauer On Reading
"One can never read too little of bad, or too much of good books: bad books are intellectual poison; they destroy the mind."
>>34756532
Reading books is very good for building empathy because they can thoroughly express the lives and minds of others.
I love books but I've been such a mess lately I don't have the fatigue for long novels.
No opinion I don't care ether way.
>>34756532
Books don't work for me. They never have.
I don't get lost in them, after a page my mind goes into whatever the fuck it feels like thinking about and ignores the words on the page.
I read the words but nothing is absorbed. Maybe I'm just more mentally ill than I previously thought.
>>34758016
Maybe it's just something you need to get used to.
Today's ADHD generation is constantly distracted by new information.
Taking the time to sit down and read something lengthier could be a good experience for you.
>>34758029
I agree with this.
It could be tough at first but absolutely worth it.
Books turned me into a furry. Stay away from reading.
bump
I wanna talk more about books.

The most successful people in the world are some of the most avid readers. You don't have to be pretentious about it but reading is entirely beneficial especially to the average brainlet.
I read most of the time when i have free time and i'm not on my computer.
It's usually nice for meeting girls because they like to pretend to be interested in what you're reading to feel smart or something.
I was an avid reader as a kid, which made me a better writer and nurtured a love of learning
I guess it's ok to not like reading, as long as you acknowledge that makes your opinion about many things uninformed
>>34759540
Haha what are you talking about? I don't need to know things to have an opinion I just need to feel things.
>>34759681
You're right, any fuckhead can have an opinion. Some are just worth listening to more than others.
Literature is the most high-minded form of escapism.
You can't be a robot if you don't read.
Currently reading this.

I'm gonna read that after I finish Alan Watts's The Book, and Timothy Leary's The Psychedelic Experience.
Not sure if I should read Basic Writings of Nietzsche or King James version of the Bible afterwards
>get to the end of a page
>realize your mind wandered and you went over several paragraphs without taking anything in
>go back to the top of the page
>mind starts wandering again
>get frustrated and start skimming over the text
>at the end, only take in 60% of the information on the page
>repeat 500 times
Wow, I sure am having a lot of fun leaping into the fantastic world of literature.

its ok anon, one step at a time. if youre having trouble reading pages worth of shit, just stop reading all of that shit. focus on the first word, then the second, then the next one. try assimilating the book one sentence at a time, even if you need to read the same sentence 20 times. only move to the next one after you are sure you understood what you just read.
it gets easier quite fast.

After I finish The Republic I'll probably move on to Nicomachean Ethics. I also own some of Nietzsches' works, but I've never got around to reading them.
>Thus Spoke Zarathustra
>Beyond Good and Evil
>The Antichrist
>>34761090
I sure hope so.
I don't want to spend months reading a novella
It's for normies. Fuck off you fucking faggot. Jesus christ this board really has gone down the shitter.
>>34761210
How is it for normies?
>>34761273
dont attempt to reason with him
>>34757992
>Reading books is very good for building empathy because they can thoroughly express the lives and minds of others.
Absolutely fucking this. You fucking get it, anon.
>>34761033
It takes me about 10-15 pages till my mind clicks into a more fluid comprehensive state of what I'm reading, mostly with fictional stories.
>>34756532
Seriously nigger nothing shapes your character better than a good redpilled book
>>34761323
Obviously, that's why a lack of want to read is synonmyous with anti-intellectualism.
If you read other people's points of view you might start questioning your own. And we all know we can't be havin' no questioners 'round these parts.
It has a higher bar of entry than other mediums (well, good lit does) but nothing else can touch it at its best.
I definitely look down on people who dismiss reading but praise anime and video games as art forms.
It's great. You need to stop smoking weed to get anything out of it though.
