It's definitely social media. The purpose is social interaction, specifically for those disenfranchised from the mainstream. Wheres normies are happy to identify themselves, 4chan users are used to living on the margins. Their meatspace identity has always been rejected and their sometimes nihilistic or unpopular perspectives would only lead to further ostracisation. Therefore people disregard that identity, partly for self-protection and partly as a rejection of the 'self' that the wider world has spurned throughout their lives.
