canadian naval reservist

it's pretty ok and is the most positive work environment ive ever had but it didnt help my other reasons for rampant depression either

part time military is an ok job, but it's just that -- a job. you won't find any life-changing experiences or anything
>>
>>34710380
I'm not from the US, we don't have the same kind of distinction between branches as you have here.

I guess it would be "army" since we only differentiate between navy/air force/ground troops
>>
I was a Marine in Afghanistan. I had to split from my fireteam because there were Hajis right behind us and we were told to head for the apartments (Too bad I went to the opposite fucking direction). I was in a home and there were Hajis right behind me and I wanted to ambush them by jumping off the building and going around inside to tag those bastards. I jumped from the 2nd floor and tried to land my feet on a fence. Of course since fences are so thin only one of my feet made it and I fell, shattered forearm and had a rock tear my left thigh open. If I didn't have my helmet I would have cracked my head open. I laid there until everything was cleared and I dragged myself over to them. The first thing they did was laugh at me because how ridiculously I failed the jump.

Also don't ever join the Marines. Ever.

British Army officer here in an airborne unit

Doing pre para selection at the moment.

The PT is fucking horrible of course because selection to be airborne is intense. Otherwise the job is OK, I struggle a bit socially with the other officers (they're all very gung ho and annoying), get on very well with the soldiers under me though.

I've only been in a short time and I'm already getting jaded, the military is such a large, faceless organisation that will eat up your time, your life and your youth and give nothing back. During training you get indoctrinated with all the heroism and idolisation of battles and heroic figures of the past, you sing patriotic songs and are taught to be proud. But it's all a bit of a farce. The military is huge, faceless, and uncaring. It sucks out your soul and restricts your freedom.

Other than that I actually do enjoy my job. Partly because it's interesting, partly because I don't really have any other options other than being a fucking phone monkey salesperson/recruitment agent like all the other people that studied pointless English/Politics/History/Philosophy degrees.

Pic related but isn't me. Just some soldier from the Guards.

it's amazing how different canada is

your first lesson in canada is how to do paperwork and read pubs, and 99% of the training is pared down industrial safety lectures and how to properly care for your uniform to look nice in public
>>
>>34710957
>your first lesson in canada is how to do paperwork and read pubs, and 99% of the training is pared down industrial safety lectures and how to properly care for your uniform to look nice in public

First lesson at Sandhurst is how to iron your kit, and then for the rest of the year you learn about leadership, how great the British Army is, how important we are as young officers and future leaders, we get asked "what is leadership" every 5 minutes, and regularly go on field exercises where we do recce patrols and platoon/company attacks all day, all night. It's all about infantry training and command appointments to teach and test leadership.

We then spend 1-2 weeks at the end, when all we are all thinking about is commissioning and getting the hell out of that hellhole, learning about what we will actually do day to day. Everyone forgets it and then goes on to phase 2 training which is again all combat focussed rather than day job focussed.

So you turn up at regiment without any fucking idea how to do your day to day work. But you're fucking good at platoon attacks.
>>

>>
>>34711552
If you don't mind group punishments, having someone scream at you from six inches away, pt, no freedom, being given tasks that are supposed to be impossible because it "builds character" and the innumerable fuckwits who are also in your platoon, it's probably not too bad.
>>
>>34711629
sounds like youre just a pussy desu
>>
>>34711727
I think the term they used was 'a weak individual'.
But yea, I understand the necessity of all those things, I just want nothing to do with them.
Good luck.
>>
>>34711050
yeah first lesson at BMNQ is doing in routines and signing for your kit properly. Like, they'll make you go to the back of the line and toss out your paperwork if you make mistakes, it's all a big show.

Then it's mostly drill, some legal stuff (RoE, ), some element specific stuff (I'm navy so we played with fall arrest gear and fire extinguishers) and a lot of powerpoints about stuff like what not to do on DND computers, what not to do with your fellow recruits' genitals or feelings, what not to do with reporters, what not to do with a tent, etc. It still reeks of that "we want you to be a Soldier with a capital S even though you joined as a clerk!" thing but it's still stuff you might want to know like how to set up mod tents or how to read a map properly

but w/e im skipping work now so fuck it ill probably be involuntarily released and kill myself soon

Get to work on electronics and navigation charts. Have to do it on a submarine though.

Would not recommend for people uncomfortable with staying inside for extended periods of time..
>>
>>34711817
is it true that people bang constantly on subs
>>
basic was ok. i didnt get yelled at much past the first week and i learned valuable skills like how to iron and that a lighter can be used to burn loose threads off
>>
>>34711840
Not that I know of. Not even the feminine gay guys that you'd expect to be doing it.

There's always someone who claims he knows someone who was on a boat with some submariner on submariner action.

Back in sub school, there were guys fucking each other in the barracks pretty often, so you''d think it happens on subs at least occasionally.
>>
I hate sounding edgy, but I don't give a shit about the majority of people and have a strong sense of duty and loyalty towards those close to me. I function well under stress and even better when I have clear and precise instructions. I also can't see myself having a problem shooting to kill.

Sadly I'm from a country with a shit military and have a medical condition that prevents me from signing up.
>>
>>34712043
Well, subs are pretty small and I hear most are hot-bunked. Maybe they don't for lack of privacy and increased stress over what you'd have on a normal bote

>>34712045
>i hate sounding edgy, but im a huge edgelord
also the military is not about that at all, it's all about making fast friends in what are essentially office job environments

the only break from that is infantry and very little of a modern armed force is infantry
>>
>>34712120
I'd still make a good grunt. There's no real requirement for an office job.

>>34710694

>>
>>34712208
Even if you're in infantry you have to be in the scenario where you would see any action. [You wont see any action]
>>
I'm in the army. Intel. It's extremely fucking stupid. If you have any brains at all you'll be frustrated constantly with how retarded it is ran and how much of your time is unnecessarily wasted. Basic was stupid, didn't learn anything except how to do pushups when someone else fucks up
>>
>>34712289
You probably read what I wrote as "I want to shoot people because I love call of duty", so you're not making much sense right now.
>>
>>34712374
Are you held to the same standard after basic as you are during training with regard to fitness and drill and keeping your uniform and bedspace neat and in order?
>>
>>34712374
>didn't learn anything except how to do pushups when someone else fucks up

t. someone not in the army. you watched too many movies broski
>>
>>34712448
Same fitness standard, uniform and room not as much but still a high standard.
>>34712554
Didn't know you were there during my basic man that's cool
>>
>>34712289
This. Only something like 10% of military members ever fire their weapons outside of training, and only like 2% are doing so in a firefight at a specific target (as opposed to firing artillery or w/e)

>>34712448
idk about him or other countries but in Canada not really. for fitness there's the FORCE test, which is super easy and vastly easier than basic, drill and uniform varies from unit to unit and activity to activity (obvs they want you looking nicer on parade or at a recruiting office than they care about you looking good on a ship or at the office) but you never do drill during normal work, that's parade stuff only. bedspace is not a thing at all, there's inspections in barracks, but they're not strict, you can do really whatever you want with your space as long as there's no permanent changes, and while there's some reporting and drill to do for inspections, the spirit of the thing is more about general cleanliness than hammering you down or looking for the slightest little thing to nail you on. it's rare to fail it, your room has to be a serious shitpit for it to happen and they're shared rooms so that's unlikely to happen since it would mean having a complacent roommate who wont beat the shit out of you for leaving your dragon dildos and dirty diapers around

but the cf in general seems to have a very much "if it works, it works" attitude to things so ymmv
>>
>>34710282
Air Force cyber guy here, shit is cash and I fucking love going to work. The people who go "HURR DURR STAY AWAY FROM MILITARY" are people who were too retarded to go into something useful / worth it, even if it is more respectable nobody gives a fuck about that besides the people getting fucked over.
>>
>>34713121
I'm also in the Air Force and I have to say that it's probably the best decision I've ever made. Unless you're making like $40k a year and single then there's no reason you shouldn't. I'm getting stationed overseas after I finish tech school and I'm single, so deployments are literally just untaxed cash straight to my pocket and I get a shit ton of benefits for living overseas. I'm also at least somewhat fit even though i don't go to the gym as much as I'd like. The only people who hate the military are either not in the Air Force or too stupid to realize how many benefits we get.
>>
>>34710348

In nupoc right now so I'm not really in the Navy but still getting paid.
>>
>>34714017
>medical
are you in med school? theres a difference between medics and doctors, despite what MilitaryMemes.Com would have you believe

if you join as a medical officer of some kind, you will literally Literally LITERALLY just be a doctor or dentist as per your schooling. you will probably make less than you would as a "real" doctor or dentist, have to deal with shitheaded recruits and pompous NCOs and other officers, and in general hate your life even more than a normal doctor.

Medics are basically infantry with advanced first aid courses. All the stress and danger of normal infantry, except you're expected to fetch people who have gotten shot and patch them up well enough that they don't die. But also you still get paid about as well as anyone else around you. Probably not a very good job to have.

if you have a hard time communicating it will be a complete hell.

if you get angry when stupid people tell you what to do it will be hell.

if doing something in a completely illogical and stupid way just because some idiot initially decided to do it that way and his ego is to big to admit he was wrong makes you angry then it will be hell.

if inefficiency and lack of logic annoys you it will be hell.

if bureaucracy annoys you it will be hell.

if you need privacy it will be hell.

if you need alone time it will be hell.

if you are too weak to take humiliation it will be hell.

if you can see beyond the normie brainwashing and sheep mentality it will be hell.

if you can't take people yelling a lot, and sometimes at you (very aggressively) it will be hell.

if you don't like licking ass or don't know how to it will be hell.

if you don't like commitment it will be hell.

if not being in control of almost anything in your life annoys you it will be hell.

i can keep going for hours, don't do it- the army is hell for a robot.

Would I be useful as a military fag? I literally have 0 self esteem and think I deserve nothing. But if scrubbing floors makes someone happy, I love it.
>>
>>34716176
a lot of things that go on in the military (as in actual work events) are of approximately zero importance so people are in general pretty unwilling to shit on you for doing badly, but will also in general say "good job" if you do your job

also a lot of people dont do their jobs so superiors are easy to impress. especially since, again, nothing is for profit and so a performance review is basically "hmm. you did the things we told you to do. A+!" but there are people who manage to fuck even that up
>>
I was a combat engineer in the Australian army. I actually wanted to get into avionics but it wasn't available to me.
I enjoyed some parts of it, mostly when I got to blow something up, but there were a hell of a lot of boring or soul destroying moments and when I got out I decided I would never have anything to do with the military again.
If I could make the decision again I would have joined a reserve unit and actually studied something or enlisted in the air force instead. That said, if not enlisting was an option that would be my top pick.
