Because we are social creatures and part of socializing is feeling mutual intimacy with someone else. This is the part that people don't get when they tell you to just pay a hooker to lose it; that isn't the point. Sex is, By large, more a mental act than it is a physical one. You can reach orgasm by yourself any time just fine. You can reach orgasm with a sex toy just fine. With a prostitute, sure, but it's still just sticking it in and out.

There's no fulfilment on the psychological level; the feeling of being wanted. The feeling of someone who wants to so intimate things with you just as much as you want to do intimate things with them. The feeling that you are accepted, for who you are, through all your faults. That you can express your deepest, darkest, and most crude desires in the presence of another -- and they in turn will deliver theirs to you.

By being a virgin, especially at older age, you are denied this very basic psychological necessity for socialization. It hurts, feeling that nobody can love you and that you aren't deserving. We've developed jealousy as an emotion for a very real and important reason - it's naive to think that one can simply shut an emotion off. You will look at others, see them accepted by multiple people, see them loved by many, sometimes rather easily.
