>read second paragraph
>read how I'll need the "intellectual courage" to read through the book several times and reach an intimate understanding of each part of the book if I want to truly understand it

Maybe I'm a dumbass and missed the point, but I thought it was fairly straight-forward: instead of acting in their own rational self-interest, most people end up serving certain ideas (spooks) which have power over them, because they believe in those ideas. Believing in spooks is often not in our best interest.
Obviously not the only thing in the text, but that is its main thesis IMO.
Spooks are a spook, you fucking spook

They're kind of the opposite, really. Humans have an ingrained desire to form relationships with others, and there are specific neurochemical structures and reactions that cause partner relationships.
I haven't read any Stirner, but from my understanding of a spook, I'm pretty sure it definitely isn't what you said, OP.

Fuck the preface and introduction, skip to Stirner's actual words

Class is a spook
>tfw you realized that spooks are the only thing that give life any value
>tfw you realize that the ego in and of itself is despicable

you are correct.
he says that he acts altruistically for egotistical reasons.
that all things he does for others are not done for either their nor his gain, but the satisfaction of his ego.
Egoism is a spook.
stirner's philosophy is a pretty bad way to live but it is interesting to think about
nihilism impossible to disprove which is why marx hated him so much
