Even expats that have lived and worked in Japan for the past decade, almost two, still can't afford a house.
The best any expat can hope for is a nice apartment, and even that's going to cost a shit ton.

I worked as an ALT in Gifu for a few years and believe me when I tell you, the only chance you have at coming close to owning property (house or apartment) is if you marry a national that can help you understand and setup that shit (loans, mortgage, taxes, negotiating payments, etc.). Otherwise you're fucked. Not even joking.
