ACTUALLY GOOD WEEABOO CARTOONS:
- Mushishi: Really philosophical and is just about a guy who walks through woods, pontificating and talking to spirits occasionally.
- Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood: Hard to describe the exact genre or setting, but it's about two brothers who get up to some emotional and action-y shit (I haven't seen it in forever).
- Neon Genesis Evangelion: Sci-fi action about a boy whose forced to take up riding mechs to defend the Earth from extraterrestrial threats. Gets suprisingly emotionally driven and is a great character study.
- Steins;Gate: Discusses the idea of time travel and how that could be used to one's benefit or ultimate demise.
- Clannad: The original is more cute, but has a heart throbbing ending where as Clannad Afterstory is just shit, don't watch it.
- Tengen Toppen Gurren Lagann: Severely autistic but the action is really hype (it took me about 10 tries to fully get through it, but I was happy when I finally did).
- Monster: Takes place in Germany: a Japanese doctor saves a young boy from certain death, but the boy ages and ends up framing the doctor for murder. Now the doctor is on the run and has to find the boy to stop him from killing again. Very slow, very exciting, very thoughtful.

Those are really anime, OP.
OH, and remember - NEVER watch an English dub.
