From what I've seen, people favor certain friends based on appearance.

Ugly dudes hang out together, muscley dudes hang out together, people naturally segregate by race, greasy anime nerds cling to one another for survival.

A healthy pack mentality forces men to seek a higher echelon of friends to signal a higher status to women.

It's the opposite with women. Most really hot women keep a really gnarly best friend to make themselves look better by comparison. Then that squad I mentioned before comes along and she knows she has her pick of the dicks.
