Even with that it still takes several years to get on disability and actually start receiving money. For people with mental problems, you get rejected a lot more. If you actually do have problems and don't have somebody to mooch off of, it seems like you'd just end up homeless.

The problem wasn't that they were banning the mentally ill, the problem is that they were doing it unilaterally with no due process and no method of appealing for a restoration of rights. A blatant violation of the due process clause.

There is already a method in place for prohibiting the mentally I'll from owning guns: you take them in front of a judge and get them adjudicated mentally deficient.

But that takes time and you actually have to, you know, PROVE that the person is unfit. It's a lot easier to just autoban them.

Of course the media will never tell you the actual facts of the situation. They prefer sensationalist fear mongering like this.
