basically chinese is like learning 2 languages, the spoken and the written which both offer their own challenges

if you want to get the most of chinese learn the traditional characters and how they are simplified. i started with simplified and kick myself everyday. you have to learn alot of chinese characters to get anywhere because the characters contain all the information about the language. the characters are pretty much building blocks that the words are made from. if you learn trad you can go anywhere in china and read anything written in china (HK and taiwan still use them)

so what you need to do is get a book on the chinese characters and start learning them.
get a book on chinese dialogs and start learning the patterns. chinese grammar is pretty simple, but there are a few ideas that don't exist in english. "integrated chinese", "a practical chinese reader", all the books teach relatively the same thing.

if you can find a teacher get them to teach you the tones. Listening and speaking chinese can be quite challenging, especially in the beginning. The chinese characters clear up the homonyms but learning them is takes a long time. Learning vocab just through hanyu pinyu is a futile effort in the long run.

if you want a paid site get yoyo chinese, it gave me a good foundation for my chinese study

I've met loads of laowai in Taiwan who've never gotten off their asses to go to a class, and they all have dumb accents and speak like idiots. My Chinese is far from perfect, but at least people don't have to doubt that I went to college when they listen to me.

You can study by yourself if you:
A. have already learned one second language to a good degree
and B. have a certificate, teaching experience, at least something that should give you an idea of how to make goals and structure your learning, benchmark your progress

Most self-study idiots just find themselves writing the same words 100 times in one day, post a picture on facebook to show everyone what a hard worker they are, then forget those words the next week because they can't into structure. Nonetheless, it has the easiest pronunciation and feels really good to speak. Chinese is painful to speak, and Korean feels like verbal gymnastics. Korean also has much more complicated verb rules than Japanese. For example, just to say "but" or "because" you have to actually conjugate the verb, whereas in Japanese you can use either the base or polite form of a verb and slap a conjunction onto the end.

Because unless you're able to master that language, and everything about it, it's absolutely useless other than maybe having some fun while learning, but that's only if you're able to appreciate and enjoy linguistics as a study. There's countless more rewarding and practical things than that.
If you learn a language, great, but if you have no other skills to speak of, then you'd be equally as useless if you were in a place where that language is spoken. If you're monolingual, but also have some skill set that isn't useless, then you'd do better in almost any country if you're language is quite common like English, Spanish, French, German, Arabic, and Chinese.
