99% of the times I've heard the word communism used, the person did not even understand the basic concept of what it is.

In a communist society THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS:

- Money
- Government
- Borders

If it has any of these 3 things, it is NOT communist. Ironically people often uses communist to refer to a state with an oppressive government, even though in communism there is no state.

The USSR was not communist.

China is not communist.

A good example of a communist society would be pre-colonial Native American tribes, or most ancient hunter-gatherer tribes.

And even then, the USSR made strong economic progress. The worst of the systematic failures came when they tried to reform it into Swedish-style social democracy from a position of naivete.
