Not sure desu, my math phd is completely irrelevant to my job but I did have a BS in comp sci and a few summers' experience programming at internships. The truth is that developers are in incredible demand right now, and companies will often hire devs who have no computer science background, as long as they are actually able to program. You may have a hard time with no college degree at all, though. I think if you get some independent projects under your belt, maybe some freelance work doing web design or making some apps, it would count for a lot, though.

Yeah, I know the meme. My PhD is in totally abstract math; I had no taste for applied stuff and was intending to stay in academia. But I didn't like doing research, and even though I loved teaching, most professor positions expect you to do research as well as teach. So I went with software instead. Pays much better anyhow. I still miss teaching undergrad math, though.

What should I answer when a possible employer asks about the years being NEET?

Oh boy. I don't ''hate'' life and I'm not necessarily miserable, probably happier than most normies, seeing how they act and the faces they wear. Still I havent found a reason to ride this rollercoaster to the end and feel like jumping off voluntarily at some point.

Saying you have depression is a good way to kill your career. They'll always associate you with it and feel you're less dependent, and can easily pass you over for promotions or having more responsibility.
