I used to stutter alot when I was a kid. Went to a specialist. Now I rarely stammer at all and I have a tendency to talk to much to fast (guess I am compensating for alot of years)

Mine was very tied up to my confidence and when you stammer, it's a downwards spiral to mutevile.

It also made me lag behind in terms of social skills. I had no difficulty talking to my friends and my stammer wouldnt be as intrusive, but if I had to talk to strangers, I had a hard time getting out a sentence without choking on 50% of the words. I remember one time I was in a store and wanted to ask about a memory card and I had to have my friend ask because I was to afraid of asking.

Presentations in class was my worst nightmare. It took forever for me to get through one, all though most of my class never ridiculed me for my stammer, the lengthy process made a few groan and shift in their seats.

I dont know if I grew it off or if my rise in confidence killed it, but at some point I had a gradual mental shift. I stopped seeing my specialist when I was about 12, it did little to nothing. Silly tounge twisters and rolling onto words. It made me feel like more of a special ed kid than I all ready did, and that affected my conficende and self esteem.

Throughout middle school I started shifting the blame. This will sound a bit hooky but whatever. You always blame yourself for your stammering. You're the stupid one, you're the retard. You deserve the ridicule and the giggling aimed at you. Somewhere along the way I started blaming everyone around me for laughing at me. You're the retard for laughing at me.
I will give you 1, if you havent encountered someone who stammers before, it can be slightly humorous, I'll even laugh with you to lighten the mood. If you keep at it and ridiculing me for it, I will call you out on it and If you keep at it, I will either stop talking to you or put you up against the wall. (Though guy talk, I know, but you have to build up some faith in yourself)

Luckily, as we get older, most become more empathetic and less and less laugh at it (except people with less than average intelligence) By that time, it's mostly in your head. Traumatic incidents from childhood have built walls that are hard to get around and alot are stuck in that limbo without realising that most around you dont care, but you do.

By university. I could have a 45 minute presentation in front of 50 people and never skip a beat. It went about 3 - 4 months until people actually noticed I had any sort of stammer. By this time, I loved having conversations, I loved socialising and I had many years of conversations to catch up on.

TL;DR stop blaming yourself and blame people for laughing at you, realise that people laughing at people stuttering is the equivelant of someone laughing at a guy in a wheelchair. Dont surround yourself with such people, most dont care by the time you're an adult. Maybe that will help you get out of the self perpetuating spiral.

most skip and stutter a bit when they get excited or stressed.

The way I used to stutter was that I couldnt even get past the word I stuttered on, like a stuck record. I had to stop and try again and most of the time I would start stuttering on the same fucking word again until I just gave up.

When I was a kid, everytime I said a sentence, I'd repeat the whole thing under my breath. I couldn't control it. My mom thought I had autism or something. Luckily it stopped.

Now, every once in a while I get the prolongation one, but I wouldn't call myself a stutterer
