I live in the countryside and it's always really quiet - nothing eventful ever happens here. But one time, a few cops were at the local train station early in the morning. Saw them tense up and get in a pouncing position - I figured some drunk guy was causing trouble or something. Turns out a goat had wandered into the station and no one knew where it came from.

Been here for the better part of a decade. I can't say for sure if people respect me or not, but they're kind enough. I get about 250,000 yen per month (most months) which is more than enough to live comfortably, travel, and put some money away into savings.

It was initially supposed to be a two to three-year stint, but I ended up making something of a life for myself here, so I'm in it for the long haul. I've been in the same place since I first got here, though I have changed apartments. City life has just never been something I've been interested in, so I'm pretty thankful.

Learning kanji individually is possible, but it's difficult to make the meaning and readings stick with no context. It may be easier for you to learn them along with vocabulary words. If you're absolutely intent on learning kanji one by one, then it could be a good idea to look up common words that include that kanji - again, to provide some context for the mass of squiggly lines in front of you.

The worst? I guess it'd be this kid who used to hurl insults at me (and everyone, really) and stabbed me in the hand with a pencil a couple times. He grew out of it pretty well, though. I've honestly been pretty fortunate up until now that I've had wonderful students and coworkers around me.

You can come to my town but I probably won't meet you. Sorry. It's not personal; I just tend to avoid casual social interaction in general.

I'm not a stupid poopskin. I don't know the language and I am not familiar enough with the culture to assimilate. I will remain where I am.
