I used to spend a lot of time on the DDR Freak Off-Topic forum. (phpBB represent) It was a bunch of random people who used to play DDR but stuck around the forums for the community. Lots of lively discussions, forum games (TWG being the big one), and in-jokes. It's a nostalgic time to look back on t b h.

These days, leddit, phasebook, and social media have swept away most of those communities, replacing them with this like/upvote driven culture. It's too bad, but it was also inevitable with changing times.

I remember having to actually dial up to someone elses pc to play remote multiplayer. Then I got the internet in the late nineties. My entire perspective of reality was blown apart.

I still remember the adrenaline rush when the 14K modem was dialing up. I remember Usenet and newsgroups that were wild as fuck. Shit that would get you put in jail today being shared online like it was nothing. Mailing lists...fuck. Yahoo chat, AIM, odigo, icq... holy fuck. I've actually met several girls irl from chat rooms and craigslist back in the day and they were all fucking normal. Not this i'm a depressed robot garbage these girls on /r9k/ do to get attention.

Trainers, port nuking, wall hacks, static ip addresses, spinner; you could actually target specific players in multiplayer games outside of the game because everyone had static ip addresses. IDS? NAT? Firewalls? Client Obfuscation? Nah...

Those were the days too when online retail was janky as fuck and you could edit the html and js to lower prices on products in your cart lol. Defeating forms and input sanitation was a cakewalk.

I still remember 4chan in it's infancy - lots of cp, gore and zany type humor. moot would actually carry on all night with the users lots of nights, especially saturday nights. really low number gets and getting a "this user was banned" for a post was a mark of honor.
