They take their time, and decomposing bodies float.
You need to make sure you get stuck, or are weighted down really really well.
Alternatively you need to get lost somewhere so vast that the chance of someone seeing you is insignificant (over 80 nautical miles out), so no tides/currents will pull you into shore.
