-Black, Grey and white roundneck short sleeve t-shirts. These go with anything and cool and casual. Imo these are best to get from skate brands as they fit nicest and are the heaviest material. Gildan is also good.

-Long sleeve t-shirts, basically same as above, also nice to wear underneath a short sleave when its cold.

-button down shirts. unless u want to look like rich kid, go for softer materials. e.g. brushed cotton or corduroy. Also feel free to go a bit more wild on colour, patterns or cut. I have a silk shirt with african print on it that is way two big, but tucked in it looks really nice.
shirts are also very versatile can be worn on their own or half open or fully open with a t-shirt underneath.

-Hoodies and sweatshirts. Usually just go black or grey. Thicker the cotton the better imo.

-trousers. I am a great supporter of Dickies trousers. They are very tough and comfy and can look casual or very smart depending how you wear them. Dickies 872 are slightly slim, Dickeis 873 are a straight fit. 874 are a wide fit. They come in loads of colours and all look really nice. Personal favourites are dark brown and charcoal. (I have both).

Fit, for one thing. Bad fits are way more noticeable with button-ups than with tees (because most people wear ill-fitting tees and you don't even stand out, whereas nobody wears button-ups), and you usually have to either look like an underwear model or visit a tailor to even get a proper fit.

Also, almost all of then look like shit when not tucked. And you're even mildly fat, they look like shit either way unless you wear something over them. /fa/ would probably disagree and call me a faggot, but to be honest unless you have the body type required to make button-ups look good you should just give up and wear T-shirts.
