This. This is what happens to me. I am nice towards everyone, hoping they will be nice to me and want to be my friends, but they just treat me like a doormat.

As someone that has been told to not start anything in a family of 4 with a whipped dad and a stepmom, nothing good ever comes from either way. I remain quiet but I have zero confidence in myself and their negativity that gets directed at me makes being nice barely attainable. When I did talk back long ago I was scorned for it despite being admittedly correct. "You added fuel to the fire". I am not allowed to an opinion with my own family. Needless to say it stunts any attempts of being nice.

If the people in your life are overwhelmingly negative, the best you'll end up is neutral.
