I am not denying that you would still be working to further the state's interests... but the vast majority of work which occurs in the civilian world does so in some form as well

Join the actual army not the guard. I joined the engineer corps in the national guard and me and everyone else hated every minute of it. Drill once a month is a joke, most of your peers are 30 something washouts, and you're still stuck in your same boring location. Plus, unless you work another job you will not be able to support yourself because you get paid near nothing. Join active, and you'll have a chance to travel, gain vet status, and possibly actually get to use your training.

As an officer (to get decent pay)? Yes.
