Usually there is an alterior motive, and they don't want to look like they need help. Like if you were a small guy, and weren't the type of person to keep around some muscle in case someone decides to bully you. Then you'd just look weak and helpless, and all that over the fact that some drunk guy is hitting on you, and you're just being too nice to sweep him out by the back of his knees and give him a concussion.
