High-functioning autistics and profoundly autistic people are entirely different birds as far as relationships go. I say the following assuming your friend is a high-functioning autistic.

Autistics have emotions just like everyone else. They just have trouble expressing them, do not understand them very well, and often don't notice them in others. Or, they express the emotion in an exaggerated fashion. They are terrible liars and tend to be bluntly honest, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Any humor they express tends to be very dry. Autistics lack subtlety and sophistication, is what I'm trying to say here.

But, if you tell an autistic what you're feeling, they'll understand and sympathize, more or less. Then, they'll try to analyze and fix the problem instead of doing nothing and comforting you like you wanted. But, ask them to do that, and they will. They experience love, but when in a relationship, they tend not to express it. They figure, we're in a relationship, so we can assume that we love each other unless either of us says otherwise.

So, he would say some blunt and undiplomatic things and some jokes that are real groaners. You would need to communicate with him in a direct and explicit fashion. You might have to remind him to say loving things to you and buy you flowers or chocolates once in a while. Your relationship would have little spontaneity and would tend to follow set routines, which autistics like.

But, for these annoyances, you would not have to deal with treachery, deception, scheming, hidden motives, disloyalty, cheating, violence, or a variety of other destructive vices which seem so obviously pointless to them that they are bewildered that anyone does such things. You would get a relationship with rock-solid, long-term stability, which is grossly undervalued in our culture. I think that that is a fair deal, myself.

It is a generalization, but not based on only myself. I have gotten to know a few other autistics in-person over the years, and interacted with others on internet forums. I have also read about these matters. You are right that there are plenty of bad apples in the barrel of autistics. The R9K forum is a good place to find these unpleasant people.

This toxicity is caused by psychological conditions that are often comorbid with autism, not so much by autism itself. These are usually the people who have dealt with the most abuse and misery from the non-autistic bad apples though, so it is good to have patience and sympathy for them. Bullying at school and at home is a sadly common occurrence, and autistics get more than their fair share of this. But they can better themselves and choose not to, so I think it is fair to criticize them.

I had a lot of the autism beaten out of me by a particularly difficult and chaotic life, which was mostly my fault, so I have a better understanding of both sides of this matter than most. I think that my characterization of traits that would be found among well-adjusted high-functioning autistics is correct.
