I'm not sure how it is around the world but here most people make friendships from forced proximity. Schoolmates, coworkers, people you have a constant long-term association with so you're forced to become familiar. Dorms give new students roommates to encourage new friendships at their new school. Making connections in higher education is very beneficial later when you start working. It also helps them save space and they can give singles rooms as special privilege to richfags and upperclassmen.

My roommate is sort of like me, in that he's depressed and stays inside all day, usually sleeping. But that's where our similarities end, he's a criminal who grew up in jail, he's extremely loud and extroverted when he does go out, he gets laid all the time, and he's overly aggresive. The uni I went to had "apartment style" dorms with private bedrooms but shared common area/bathroom/kitchen. They only let second years on stay in them though. If you were a freshman, you got stuck in a room the size of a large closet with up to three other people. Freshmen were also required to live on campus so they could fall for the "college experience" meme. I did my time in the Closet, did the bare minimum of shit like mandatory hall meetings, and moved to a one bedroom apartment at the soonest possible opportunity.

Yes, it's a ghetto as fuck school and he's in a gang. If I snitch I'd almost certainly get jumped or killed. We have had a student get shot every year, earlier this year some guy got beat nearly to death by like 11+ dudes, and a lot of the violence gets covered up. Some girl got ran over and hospitalized but it never made the news. People get robbed at gunpoint but the school tries to hide it.

I confronted him but obviously he wouldn't tell the truth, even though there's no one else who could really done it.

Wrong. Having a roommate isn't going to make you normal, I fell for that same meme. It helps very slightly, but after that it' yields diminishing returns. Having somewhere to cool down from socialization is important for your mental health, espescially if you're introverted. Having your own space that isn't constantly being invaded by strangers is important. Also it's better for studying, my roommate sleeps all day and night which means the lights are always off and it kills my productivity. You can still be outgoing, but having the choice to be alone is very valuable. I'd say get your own room, but make an effort to socialize and stay integrated. I got really, really lucky with my college housing experiences
