I love NHK. It's my favorite series. It's too bad that more people don't know about it.

Vandread is less pervy than it seems at first glance. Haruhi Suzumiya is a good series, and fairly short. FLCL is a classic.

Oh, you want a loner protagonist? I dunno, Chobits maybe? The protagonist in Fruits Basket starts out as a loner. You'd probably relate.

Shigurui. No one mentions it, no one's seen it. It has a grim, doomed aesthetic to it. It's based around the fact that as a matter of historical record two disfigured martial artists - one blind, one missing a limb - from the same school fought each other to the death in a tournament. The story is at times poetic and the tone is morbid. It has a really great, bleak aesthetic. One of my all-time favourites.
