You're half right.
If you do and say things that stand out, you'll get strong reactions from people, good and bad. If you're wishy-washy, you'll get neutral reactions. The former is preferable.

Just as you fail to find a woman many fail to catch fish sometimes you need to reel in and check if you still have bait.
If you have no bait you must put bait on the hook. Sometimes we catch fish so great we never need to fish again sometimes those break the line. The trick is to keep fishing until you've found dinner and to return to the pond until you've feed yourself for eternity.

look out for yourself, don't even seek other's wisdom. anything is possible and we have to find our own truths and limits in life.
