There's a famous critique of postmodernism written by David Foster Wallace that includes a damning indictment of irony.

The gist of his argument is that irony is a destructive rhetorical device. It's use is to mock and destroy. That makes it valuable to expose hypocrisy and meaninglessness. In that capacity it has been the centerpiece of postmodern culture.

But it doesn't actually add any value. People wrap themselves in a shroud of irony because they fancy themselves as having recognized the flaws in modern culture. The problem is that having identified this supposed meaninglessness they don't actually try to build any meaning. They just cast themselves adrift into a cruel and pointless existence. Irony on its own is nihilist.
