if it is the first Chinese restaurant in your town, it will most likely be very americanized and not a very realistic representation of authentic Chinese food. That being said, American Chinese food is itself a genre of food, and it does a few things very well.

General tso's or Sesame chicken are safe bets. Its pretty much fried chicken tendies with sauce. Lo mein is also a good choice if you want a noodle type dish.

Also you dont have to worry about portion sizes, its more like 50% rice 50% other stuff, always enough to fill me up + have leftovers.

And yes, its MUCH better than a microwaved meal, even the worst chinese places are.

Actual Chinese is something you either like or hate. Lots of strong tastes.
